Quite possibly it does not make sense. If one works only in Windows and can
do all that is needed using the tools in that environment, there is no need
to change. One might change due to personal preference, such as a penchant
for free software, or a love of ligatures, but it's not necessary -- and
since you asked for concrete reasons, rather than personal ones, I won't
discuss that aspect.
One thing I can think of that can benefit those with a hacker mentality is
that, with LyX, just because there isn't a toolbar button or menu item for
some function, that doesn't necessarily mean you can't do it. Because LyX
uses the (La)TeX system to do the typesetting, anything that can be done in
TeX can be done with LyX. Word does not allow me to pass commands to the
typesetting engine, because that engine *is* Word -- so if there's no way to
do something via Word's GUI, it can't be done.
Now, if you want opinions and preferences, rather than hard facts, I'll be
happy to preach. ;)
