Recently I hada similar problem on Mandrake Linux, and I have found that the
new style files installed under the TeX tree at /usr/share/texmf/ etc have
permissions of 600, ie only root can read them, this of course stops lyx
from noticing them.
1. make sure the class/style files have read permission for everybody, and
2. check the log output form teh LyX->configure command to see if LyX has
discovered
a) the layout file
b) the class/style file(s)
