error when including bibtex file

hi
i am trying to include a bibtex file (.bib) in a lyx document, according 
to the tutorial, but i always get the following error:
LaTex error:something's wrong--perhaps a missing \item.
\end{thebibliography}

any ideas?

the .bib file was generated using gBib 0.1.1.
running redhat 6.2, lyx 1.1.6fix3.
