Herbert,

  OK, my first attempt at writing LaTeX code has bombed. I need some
tutalage here.

  I entered into the letter preamble:
\renewcommand\@oddhead{toname\\@date\\thepage}

and what I have across the top of page 2 and subsequent ones is:
toname                          @date                   thepage

  Humorous, I admit, but not what I want.

  What I'm looking to do is have on page 2 and subsequent pages:

<to_name>
<letter_date>
page <page_number>

  Will someone please point out the errors of my ways?
