I have found that the sequence of commands in the preamble makes a
difference. In a document (article class) on which I was working yesterday,
if I put '\fancyfoot[RO, LE] {\thepage}' as the last line it generated
errors up at the title. When I moved it up one line, before the other
fancyfoot line it worked.
My attitude is to shrug and just learn to live with it. :-)
