Many thanks to those who responded to my query. I haven't a fix for the problem (Chris Duncombe Rae, in particular), but I am now pretty sure that it is nothing to do with LyX. I found that starting again from scratch made the problem go away. The same thing happened when I installed another application program on my Slackware Linux 8.0 PC (2.4.10 kernel, 2.2.3 glibc) from the same NFS-mounted source file system (from an SGI Origin 2000 with Irix 6.5).
