I've been editing LaTeX for 11 years. I've always had
\renewcommand{\rmdefault}{phv}
\renewcommand{\sfdefault}{phv}
\rmfamily
near the top of my document.
Thanks for LyX. I'm not sure whether I'll use it but I guess it might help many
people.
