I ran into 2 problems: 1) oddly, the 2 key didn't work. and 2) some keys required striking twice to take. #1 I solved by eliminating unneeded keycode designations from your .Xmodmap file. (caused maybe by not having exactly the same keyboard type as you.) #2 was caused by having american.kmap designated as a keymap file. This was unnecessary because I can get these symbols other ways now if they're ever needed. I see that the kmap file would be useful if these types of symbols were frequently needed. I can get the copyright character with either Alt_R+c or Control_R followed by "CO." :-) (The docs mentioned that keys to "follow" applied in some cases but wrote examples using "+" -- which to me has always meant "hold the keys down while pressing subsequent key.") (I achieved the former (Alt_R+c) by adding the word "copyright" to the letter C keymap line in .Xmodmap.) I can get umlauts (not that I need them in English -- but for when I try to amuse my German friends) by using Alt_R+the vowel, plus I can get any of the upper bit characters with the compose key (Control_R for me now) followed by any 2-letter code. So I'm very happy with my keymappings now! :-) My previous attempt failed to get either the Multi_key OR Mode_switch working. So this was a tremendous help. Thanks again also to Ronald Florence for this very useful table with all of these upper-bit characters -- listed in html (with ascii#), octl, hex, cmp (the 2 letter code), char and meanings -- provided in his message to this thread on Dec.27th. The cool thing about these is that they not only work in LyX, but anywhere in X. :-) I don't know why the compose key is called "Multi_key" I wish doc-writers would be more attentive to providing definitions!! (I had thought "multi_key" referred to multiple dead keys used simultaneously. Wierd ideas spring from wrong or missing definitions! Now it's obvious that it must mean that it allows multiple (2) subsequent keystrokes to designate a keycode otherwise unavailable. I was plunking around based on lacking data and actually discovered how it worked by mis-typing and shocking myself into finding that I'd typed a copyright symbol and then re-traced how I did it. Amusing now -- aggravating at the time. > It has ctrl_right as <compose> or Multi_key and > alt_right as Mode_shift (like on german keyboards). Mode_shift+auo gives > , How did you do THAT?! I can see those upper-bit characters and I'm in character mode! But I can't type them here in pine. Here I go again! <:-) It's okay though if there's no quick answer I don't really need them here. Just curious. Maybe you do your e-mail in an X app. > Hope that helps, Helps immensely! You really bailed me out of my difficulty.
