Besides the ERT, there is a almost WYSIWYM solution: in Mathed, after
pressing Ctrl-Space for a "hard space", you can change this space by
pressing the Spacebar (without Ctrl!) immediately after inserting. The
inserted space-type cycles between several positive spaces (becoming bigger)
and finally a small negative space (\, ..., \quad, \quadd and \!, if I
remember right).

All of them are also in the Spaces-table of the math-panel (Edit>Math (?))

Almost WYSIWYM, becouse the negative space is displayed as a blue caret
(instead of red for the positive ones) and shifts the symbols apart on
screen - but the latex preview will show the right result.

And in Text: insert a math-box with a negative space.
