Well, debian has >8000 packages, so not all of them get installed by default. For libraries in particular, they are split into "runtime" and "dev" packages, with the latter often not installed. On my system, you need "xlibs-dev" to be able to build against Xpm. Elke: your best bet is to get the lyx package installed, it works as smooth as silk!
