Read section 3.3.6 on Extended.lyx in order to learn how to have "good fonts" when using ps2pdf. Also, the problem you had with the bitmap image when you converted them to PDF was due to your broken version of pdftex (probably 0.13d). Of course, even without bugs, the correct way to is not to convert to PDF, but to convert to png/jpeg.
