Hello, This may seem pretty far fetched, but I had similar stange behaviour last summer when compiling my linux kernel.. It turned out the cpu fan wasn't rotating at full speed anymore, and that together with the hot weather made the cpu overheat when doing something heavy-duty like compiling a kernel..
Anyway, as I said. That is probably not it.
