I want to find a way to put dates into a section header for log entries. I'm
pretty much brand new to TeX, LaTeX, and LyX.

First of all I'm wondering if there's a way to read cls/sty files from a local
dir... when I run configure to get LyX to pick up my new 'layout' file, it
always says,

"Checking for document class log [log]" no

I fixed that by logging in as root and essentially duplicating the log.cls and
log.sty files and rerunning 'texhash'.

Can I work on the style files as a normal user?

Secondly, I'm wondering how I actually put in dates for a heading. It's sort
of like instead of the section number, you get:

2002-04-16 Developments of the hour are as follows.

I'm totally lost with how I can do it and I just don't know where to start.
Searches in the documentation for 'date header' or 'date style' don't turn up
anything useful. LaTeX itself is so huge that it's daunting to browse
through a cls file, trying to figure out where to put your \newcommand and
what arguments to add to it.

If anyone can assist me, please let me know what I can do to help learn
styles.
