This is an answer from an amateur i using Lyx (who has also only used it for 2 months), but perhaps it can be of help. Sometimes the export/view (dvi or ps on my old 1.1.4fix3) functions of my Lyx stopped working. I have no clue about why this happened, but this helped: Quit Lyx, (**), restart it from an xterm, run Options -> reconfigure, quit and restart. Now I always start lyx from xterm, and never get the problem. (**) At this point you may try to remove (make backup) of your ~/.lyx directory, but I didn't really figure out if it had to be done.
