why should this not compile??
\documentclass{article}
\begin{document}
\emph{ blah %
\begin{table}%
\begin{tabular}{|c|}\hline blah\\\hline\end{tabular}%
\end{table}%
}
\end{document}
run it with latex or do the same in lyx. LyX exports this like
\emph{blah \begin{table}
\emph{\begin{tabular}{|c|}
\hline
\emph{blah}\\
\hline
\end{tabular}}
\end{table}
blah}
and it's a real bug, because \emph toggles and the "Blah" in the
cell is upright.
