Yes, I did a little searching and found you are right. I downloaded wv
and performed an painless make/make install. wv then seemed to convert
some word docs into LaTeX without any problem. It also worked really
fast. Unfortunately, it can't convert RTF to LaTeX. This is ironic,
because generally it is a good practice for Word users to save their
file as RTF if they intend to share it, since RTF will open in any
version of Word, as well as other word processors. Yet, if you get an
RTF file, you can't use wv to convert it!

I have an older version of LyX which did not automatically detect wv.

There is a problem with wv, however. If you have worked really hard to
set up styles in Word (which you should always do!), then these styles
will be lost using the wv convertor. If you convert an RTF document to
XML, then you can perform a conversion and preserve your styles. 

Too bad wv doesn't have a Word to XML option. There really is a need for
this. Maybe I'll try to induce the people at wv to work on this project.
In the meantime I'll try to finish my perl script.
