That's true. I'm the one who suggested basically to implement character styles in the exact same way as Environments, which would imply that new character styles could be built in .layout files. But actually, my main concerns are: 1. The mapping of the character style to the appearance on paper can be changed by the user, and that new mappings can be created. 2. The user be able to name his character styles, and those names will be evident in the .LyX file (for purposes of import, export and scripting -- I do lots of LyX manipulation with non-LaTeX, non-LyX scripts -- one of LyX's greatest strengths, IMHO). 3. The look of text in that character style appears somewhat like its paper cousin in the LyX environment. 4. A quick and easy way to assign a character style to a block of text, or to text you're typing. The way Environments are done is certainly sufficient, although it would be even better if it could be done from the keyboard. By the way -- is there a way to map keystrokes to individual environments?
