I believe that some mathcal fonts may have the lower case, and some others do not.
In particular, I know that mathptmx does not have lower case,
but I'm not sure which fonts might have lower case.

I can't see anything in this screenshot (the text is too small).
Anyway, \mathcal only works with uppercase letter!
