I often use math mode symbols in normal text. I have to write bio papers in
which I use microliters (ul) and so forth. I simply insert the Greek/math
symbol for micro in the text to make the correct text output shorthand for
microliter. It wouldn't matter if a whole list of symbols used a math mode
type of system to insert into text as it works fine anyway.

I have to use small circle set to superscript to produce degree symbols too.
I would actually prefer to be able to SEE the symbol depicted in my text in
Lyx in a math mode type view so I could see that what I am inputting is
actually what I wanted (one of the strengths of WYSIWYG). Guessing on the
use of a symbol is fraught with error. You can only see if it is what you
really wanted by rendering a preview in postscript (or pdf or whatever).
