This way does not work; probably I was not clear enough; maybe it is a bug.

Let me spell out what I do:

1) Go to buffer and type

math-macro tov 1

2) there apeears an empty macro definition box

3) I type in

math-macro-arg space

and go out of box !

4) or
 I type

\math-macro-arg space

and go out of box
(the sequence is red until the first hyphen)

Am I doing something wrong ?

Or maybe I just should update to 1,2.x.

PS: I also get often error messages like

Math error: Attempting to clean a void array.

Thank you for teh help,

Misha
