Hello,

did anyone succeed to install the LyX 1.2.1 package that comes with the
Gentoo 1.4 distribution? The dependencies manager of Gentoo (portage)
wants to install several other programs before installing LyX, and one
of them is jadetex (I don't know what that one does), and the
installation procedure of jadetex stops with the following error:

# emerge lyx
Calculating dependencies ...done!
 >>> emerge app-text/jadetex-3.12 to /
 >>> md5 icon_wink.gif jadetex-3.12.tar.gz
 >>> Unpacking source...
 >>> Unpacking jadetex-3.12.tar.gz
 >>> Source unpacked.
tex jadetex.ins
This is TeX, Version 3.14159 (Web2C 7.3.1)
I can't find the format file `tex.fmt'!
make: *** [basic] Error 1

So it seems that tetex does not find the "tex.fmt" file, and I looked in
the /usr/share/texmf/web2c folder and there is not a single *.fmt file.
I found some info on the jadetex homepage about how to generate the
(la)tex.fmt file, and I did that, but then the installation of jadetex
stops a little bit further complaining that it does not find
pdfetex.fmt... :-(. It seems that there is no pdftex or pdfetex or
pdflatex included in the distribution.

I just wanted to install evereything by compiling it "the Gentoo way",
the packege manager downloads the sources as necessary and compiles &
installes them, keeping a consistent interdependency state between all
the packages. Of course, I could try to manually compile and install the
whole stuff, but I just wanted not to mess everything with "managed"
packages and manually installed ones. Too many so-called package
management systems on linux...

Any idea?

Regards,
Lucian
