After more experimentation I've found I can install directly from the tarball using the normal configure/make/make install procedure, so I'm guessing the problem lies in rpm's environment being subtly different from when I do a make. I'm going to compare the output from make and the rpm build proces to look for clues, but I have no experience troubleshooting RPM's so I'm open to other ideas. While I can live with just the tarball install, I'd prefer to have the thing registered with RPM.
