The "literate" classes refer to a hybrid document combining documentation
and programming source. This "literate program" can then be processed
in two ways: one produces beautiful documentation and the second produces
program source code. Its genesis is in the works of Donald Knuth's
original (Pascal) WEB language in which he wrote TeX.
You need to have the "noweb" system installed to have the "literate" classes
work.
You can use the article or book class for literary texts without problem.
