So, in my desire to have ctrl-d delete like I'm used to, I switched to
emacs mode.

I didn't read the documentation thoroughly enough as I didn't realize that
switching to emacs mode would reduce my ability to use lyx quite THIS
much.

For example, it appear to be an irreversable selection, and a final one,
as all options for configuration simply disappear after emacs mode is
slected.

and help- while admittedly not something we like to admit to using- is
just not available in any emacs style form. Nor is *it* in the menu system
up top on the menu bar.

I'm a bit confused as to how to get out of this.

But you *won't* win. I will not start using vi by choice because of this :)
