So why not stick with lyx 1.1.6fix3 (or fix4)? (I presume that's what you meant, there is no version 1.6.3) I tried lyx 1.2, preferred lyx 1.1, so that's what I'm sticking with. Yes, the lack of backward compatibility is a bit of a hassle, but that is a lesson learnt: read the documentation carefully before installing a new version of a piece of software.
