This is the first time I've tried to check the spelling since I
installed 1.2.1. LyX freezes for a while but the spell checker panel
never appears. Is this a known bug? How do I fix this? I'm using RH 8.0
on an Intel computer.

1. Start LyX from the console and try again. You will get an error message "Can't open /usr/lib/ispell/xyz.hash" or so. "xyz.hash" is the dictionary which ispell is looking for (e.g. aenglish).

2. Have a look at /usr/lib/ispell: how is the dictionary called? I suspect that its name differs from the one which is searched.
3. Now open the preferences dialog in LyX (edit->preferences), go to the tab Language->Spellchecker, check the checkbox "use alternative language" and type the name of the dictionary, which you have found in the ispell directory, (without the extension) into the input field.

(it's not a bug but a non-intuitive behaviour ... and a real FAQ in the meantime).

I'm not sure what the difference is between ispell and aspell. I installed Redhat 8.0. aspell is installed but not ispell. (I cannot find an ispell rpm for RH 8.0.) I tried changing the preferences in LyX to aspell. But I get:

$ The file "/home/chippy/.aspell.english.pws" is not in the proper format.
Ispell read timed out, what now?

Are both aspell and ispell required?

Thanks.
