It is pretty straightforward, but since you asked, I will elaborate:

First download the lyx sources since there aren't any rpm binaries yet (or just wait until they come out.).

unpack the source (gzip -d ... , tar xvf ..)
run the ./configure in the lyx directory

If it complains about the xpm library and headers, install the xpm development rpm from the Mandrake distribution disks (using rpmdrake).

You will also need xforms 1.0 (configure will most likely complain about that too).

xforms 1.0 happened to be on the Mandrake CD, but was corrupt on my CD (which I downloaded from Mandrake) and didn't want to install, so if that is the case, just download a new one (see the file README, it is also on the lyx.org ftp site.)

follow instructions in the readme of xforms and install it.

Back to lyx, run the configure, it will most likely work this time.
If anything else is missing, it is probably on the original distributions CDs (since my configure didn't complain about anything else).

then "make"
"make install" (as root).

and you should have it running.

The original lyx 1.2.1 that came with Mandrake is in /usr/bin.

This package installed itself in /usr/local/bin/lyx (you can probably change that if it really bothers you). Just rename or remove the lyx in /usr/bin, or just remove the lyx 1.2.1 package altoghether.

Hope this helps.
