Or add in the preamble (not tested, of course)
\renewcommand{\footnote}[1]{[{#1}]}
OK, It is probably more complicated than this, but I suspect that
killing a footnotes by hand is not the right solution. After all,
these are still notes, the only difference is the way they are presented.
