Claus just e-mailed a couple of solutions for this.  I think he was 
responding to people who'd e-mailed him, and so in case you weren't one 
(and for the benefit of anyone else reading this thread), it turns out 
that deleting all the files in /usr/local/share/lyx/xfonts seems to solve 
the problem.  On my system, at least, that was eight *.pfb files and two 
font.* (or was it fonts.* ?) files.  Reinstalling them from an 
appropriate source (Claus sent me a tarball of his) seems to work, but as 
best I can tell you don't need to -- LyX seems to run fine with the 
directory empty.

No idea why that works, but (so far, at least) it does.
