Hi,

I've recently installed lyx 1.3.0 build for redhat 8.0. I'm having a problem where math symbols sometimes show as different symbols than they should and sometimes show as a name in red. From looking through the archives for this group, it sounds like the issue is the availability of the cmex10 font. This does seem to be available, in the sense that xlsfonts shows it. Also, I have tried adding the fontpath for it via chkfontpath --add /usr/share/lyx/xfonts, to no avail.

I also tried looking at output from "lyx -dbg any" for a file that had just \sum. The output for this includes the lines:
symbol fallback for sum
read symbol 'sum inset: lyxsymbol draw: -27 extra: mathop'
font cmex not available and I can't fake it

I also found:

font cmm not available and I can't fake it
creating inset with name: 'sum'

xlsfonts | grep cmex10 gives two lines:
-unknown-cmex10-medium-r-normal--0-0-0-0-p-0-adobe-fontspecific
-unknown-cmex10-medium-r-normal--0-0-0-0-p-0-adobe-fontspecific

Interestingly, the reconfigure log includes this line:

checking [for cmex10]... yes (pfb)

The other mail that discussed this problem resolved it by changing XftConfig. Unfortunately, this is not an option for me as RH8 replaces this file with /etc/fonts/fonts.conf (and I haven't a clue what, if anything should be changed there).

Any help will be much appreciated.
