Thanks much..  I anticipated and chose the second approach.  I later saw 
that there was an Edit > Reconfigure option but I don't think it would 
have helped anyway since I'm pretty sure there was a message in the 
./configure step to the effect that LyX would be gen'd w/o the 
thesaurus.  I have Lyx up and running w/ the Thesaurus feature enabled 
and am having a really great time playing with it.  Chris.
