I guess we need a differentiation between "simple" macros which could be
edited in-place, and "complicated".
What we have now would be for "complicated" macros.
The main problem for the simple macros is the cursor movement between
cells. If we have \def\a#1#2#3#4{\stackrel{#4}{#2}\stackrel{#3}{#1} the
movement would feel really awkward (even worse than the current hopping I
believe). But I agree that for really simple structures in-place would be
better...
