Is there some place in the src/ tree where I can get a
full list of these strings "sqrt", "frac", "mathalpha"
and so on?

as "char apostrophe mathalpha" rather than "char '
mathalpha", perhaps.

"supported" is in quotes, I presume, because there is
no real specification of what functionality is
supported, right?

This would be the best solution in the long term.

I think there is already a routine "mathmlize" that
does that in mathextern.C.

Although in my opinion an interface with a CAS from a
word processor is not really functional unless you
have access to the full functionality of that CAS.
ScientificWord had this link to Maple and I played
with it a while ago (when I was still using Windows).
It's good for show-off (here's an integral and look
here's the answer) but not for real work where you
need to coax the CAS into doing exactly what you want.
