Exactly. Being unable to view a file within LyX is easily resolved outside of 
LyX executable itself. Improving the code so that it doesn't crash ever is of 
greater long term importatance.

Please run lyx within gdb and post the backtrace when it crashes.

Incidentally,
what happens when you run from the command line:
$ sh ${path_to}/convertDefault.sh EPS:${your_file}.eps PNG:${your_file}.png
once you substitute proper values for ${path_to} etc?
