thanks Nicolas.. I was only able to find the latex-xft package at the above address. I installed it in the .fonts directory and ran fc-cache -fv.. Now, when I open a dcoument in lyx, I see more of modern art than English text.. take a look: www.personal.psu.edu/nug107/LyXSnapshot1.jpg I also got the latex-ttf package from another address but that also resulted in the same behavior as shown in the screenshot above.
