The problem is that LaTeX requires that the brackets be mathed.
Andr� couldn't think of a way to allow you, the user, to do this 'just by
typing' whilst still ensuring that the generated LaTeX would be valid.
If you can think of a way, shout!
There is suggestion for a 'LaTeX mode' to mathed that would enable you to do
just this sort of thing.
