Hello Nicolas.. I had this problem last week.. in my case, even after I'd
installed latex-xft-fonts, everything was messed up (my entire document
looked like some sort of painting).. but it turned out that somehow the
default screen fonts that I had set (Bitstream Charter) got switched with a
font with a similar name (Bitstream Charter (Zz_Abiword).. very
mysterious.. so you may want to check whether any such thing has happened..
I'm guessing in your case, latex-xft-fonts may solve it like Angus
suggested..
