Using the 'text editor - LaTeX' combo is not unheard of.

It's in fact what I do unless I use LyX (or venture into the dark
realms ... *cough*)

'import' is the wrong word. One usually builds a LyX .layout file for
some existing .sty. Most of the time one could just copy article.layout
or similar. Tweaking them is simple.

Insert->Tex offers you a way to put arbitrary (La)TeX code at (almost)
any point of your doument.

The main 'con' is that you are no longer free to use a text editor of your
liking but have to cope with what LyX offers.
