Magic. Take a look in the LyX documentation for multicols. You can move in
and out of single, double, triple ... whatever column modes with the LaTeX
insertions:
\begin{multicols}{2}
\end{multicols}
Just make sure that the term is plural (multicols) and not singular.
I use this in a couple of chapters in my book to typeset long lists in two
columns on the page. It works like a charm.
