That's almost too simple. :-)
I changed the type to \chapter*, then added ERT to:
\addcontentsline{toc}{chapter}{Preface}
\pagenumbering{roman}
\setcounter{page}{1}
placed at the beginning of the preface text. It all works just fine with the
Springer-Verlag monograph style.
