I'm trying to enter the following equation:

                        /
        \mu_A(x) =      < 1, if and only if x \in A
                        \ 0, if and only if x \notin A.

  Looking at Herbert and Andre's responses to my previous request for
guidance, I've use \cases and pressed ctrl-m, right to space between words.
After too long a time playing, it looks OK on the LyX page but generates a
ton of errors (about 10, actually) when I try to compile the document.
There's something about the specific codes that TeX doesn't like. I'm
stymied.

  The code, copied with the pointy device from the Lyx page:

 \mu_{A}x=\begin{cases}
1,\textrm{}if\textrm{}and\textrm{}only\textrm{}if\textrm{}x\textrm{}\in\textrm{}A\\
0,\textrm{}if\textrm{}and\textrm{}only\textrm{}if\textrm{}x\textrm{}\notin\textrm{}A\end{cases}\textrm{}

  What have I done incorrectly, please?

TIA,

Rich
