This is more out of curiosity than to solve a problem.

I have illustrative figures for different shapes of fuzzy sets. I want to
put references to the appropriate figure when the shapes are mentioned in a
sentence, and I want to place the figures themselves where TeX can place
them as appropriate on the typeset page.

At first, I tried to put the figure float at the end of the paragraph,
but then the cross-reference to it also appeared at the end of the paragraph
-- immediately in front of the figure. What I finally ended up doing was to
embed the figure floats within the sentence and put the cross-references
immediately in front of each float.

It works, but I wonder if there's a preferred way to do this.

Thanks,

Rich
