with \usepackage{bm} in the preamble

\widehat{\bm{\beta}}

Thanks Herbert.. what is the difference between \bm and \boldsymbol ? It seems like the \widehat with \bm centers the hat well whereas with \boldsymbol, the hat is shifted a little to the right (for \beta i.e.) .. is this it?

Also, I was playing around and if I use \bm{\hat{\beta}} I get the following error:

TeX capacity exceeded, sorry [main memory size=1000001].
 $\bm{\hat{\beta}}
                      $
If you really absolutely need more capacity,
you can ask a wizard to enlarge me.

But if I change the \hat to \widehat, then it compiles fine. Why does LaTeX give up on the \hat within a \bm? It happens if I use \boldsymbol instead of \bm too.

Thanks,
nirmal
