That's what I thought I did. Apparently, xfig 3.2.4 does not save the 
whole path in the .fig if the embedded .eps is located in the same 
directory. I have moved the .eps to an extra directory. Now the path is 
saved and all is fine.
Can one consider this behavior of xfig a bug? The problem only occurs 
when lyx copies the .fig to a temp dir during latex conversion.
