  I suspect there's no way that LyX will recognize what words you want
emphasized without hints from you. However, you can modify the keystrokes
LyX recognizes by making changes to the appropriate file in
~/.lyx/bind/*.bind.

  I prefer the cua bindings (rather than the emacs bindings) so I changed
them to use ctrl-i to turn on and off emphasis (Italic) style. I've also
made several other changes so the keyboard works best for me. Unfortunately,
while I was able to re-map ctrl-x to cut sections of text, the meta-v chord
refuses to work for pasting. So, I need to invoke that from the edit menu.
With a bit of time you can customize the keyboard to help you write more
efficiently.
