Same result in 1.3.3. I'm not sure if this is a bug or a "feature", though. If you surround the plain text with dollar signs before converting it (and include any braces needed), highlighting and clicking the math mode toolbar button does what you want. For instance:


This number is converted into a math env $^{123}$

then highlight everything between the $...$ (inclusive) and convert.

You might want to post a suggestion on Bugzilla that clicking the (a+b)/c button with text highlighted automatically supply opening and closing dollar signs. I can't see what that would hurt (other than that, if the text already had dollar signs, it would go to display mode rather than inline, which in any case is easy enough to fix).
