The simple answer is, I don't know really. The guy who does is Andre
Poenitz and he's busy in the real world ATM.
However, I've just installed Maxima here, so...
* start LyX;
* open a new document;
* Create a math inset Insert->Math-Display formaula and fill it with
"1+2";
* Highlight it using the mouse;
* Invoke Maxima Edit->Math->Use Computer Algebra System->Maxima. The
inset is changed to "1+2=3".
So it seems to work...
Try
"diff(cos(x),x)".
Sending this to Maxima results in
"diff(cos(x),x) = -sin(x)
