Ok after a full night of head scratching & hitting
wall, i discovered what produced this nasty phenomena:
when i pasted in a editor the .lyx snippet from the
german .lyx file, the editor automatically changed the
_fileencoding_ of the file from latin1 to utf-8. So
the files looked _exactly_ the same on vi, but
different on mozilla and lyx.
Watch out! this is rather annoying and can make you
feel obnoxious and ready to throw the computer out of
the window
