  I appreciate the helpful comments addressed to my third question
(involving spacing of display mode math), but that turns out to be a
non-issue.

  In the meantime, I'd really like to solve the \forematter pagination
problem described below. The difference(s) between \textellipsis and \ldots
is for my future benefit but is not blocking production of my book.
