One thing TeX does and Word doesn't is to break a paragraph as a whole and not line-per-line. This way TeX can ensure that a "dense" line is not followed by a line using lots of inter-word space. This might sound like a very tiny, unimporant detail but already a single occurence of such a "bad" line pair is noticable, even from a distance. Not to mention math type setting... Andre'
